The Tlingit and Haida have two clans, Eagle and Raven. Eagles traditionally marry Ravens and Ravens marry Eagles because all members of the clan are considered brothers and sisters. An item of value with both a Raven and Eagle design may be given as a love token to someone of the opposite clan, therefore it is called a Lovebirds token.

The Tlingits tell the story that Raven’s people were tired of always being in the dark, so Raven contrived a plan to be born as a human baby to the daughter of the Great Chief. He played on the floor of Grandfather”s lodge and whined to play with the beautiful glowing ball in the cedar box. Grandfather spoiled this charming child and let him play with it, but Raven seized his opportunity and quickly transformed back into Raven. With the ball, Raven flew for the smoke-hole but when he squeezed thru the ball fell apart. Raven caught all the parts and with one mighty heave threw them into the sky. Thus Sun, Moon and Stars were flung into the universe to light up the sky.

To the Haida people, Wolf is a division of the Raven Clan and some people like to wear their designs to show their clan affinity. Some just love Ravens and Wolves because they are the epitome of the wild spirit and so much alike in that respect. They certainly do symbolize the freedom of the wild.

Speaking of pretty little birds, here is a spirit helper with an exquisite cheery little call and a jaunty little black cap. The Cherokees have a story of Chickadee, the bird of truth, helping them in a trying situation. To the rest of us Chickadee”s seemingly fearlessness teaches a lesson to encourage us to open our minds to the joys of life.

Janet Walker created this ring design as a representation of a traditional Northwest Coast Style Carved Bentwood Box. Traditionally a bentwood box was created using hot water or steam to bend the wood. The outer side was artistically carved to include totems and mystical characters. I imagined a village after a flood with a box of dried salmon floating downstream, waterlogged, with only one carved corner sticking up waiting to be found.

The Indians of the Pacific Northwest believed that before the first people were created the world was inhabited by animals who lived and acted as people. In some tribes, the most powerful of these people were bears. Today the bear represents one of the last true symbols of the natural world. For those of us who claim Bear as our totem, we must remember not to be reclusive, but to come out of our den. The world needs us. We are chiefs, mighty hunters and and powerful protectors.
